“Live by Night” wasn’t a bad film, but it was a bad mafia film. The acting, for the most part, was good but the writing and the direction of the film was hard to read. It was trying to be like “Goodfellas” or even “The Godfather”, while also trying to be touching, in a way that made it feel much less like a mob movie and more of a crime drama.
“Keeping Up with the Joneses” had all the potential of being a great comic spy movie. However, even with its array of popular actors, the movie fell short; the buildup was too long and it wasn’t memorable.
We needed to feel every beat of this character’s emotional spectrum and change, which Jenkin’s delivers on in full force. Resulting in a sophisticated and moving tale that’s impact and power is something that will outlive its surprise win at the Oscars. See it and be awestruck.
