And Thank God Nothing Ever Lasts

2018 Print: Daunting by Jordan Kramer

It just so happens that I am tired of being
Anything in a country loud with talk
And little change, a city in a state
With red flags flying after pride
When really it’s just a warning.
They will stamp across the earth
In boots with steel tips and mouths
Wide open with teeth bared
Like a tiger.

It just so happens that I am tired
Of being one among several of Frankenstein’s
Creatures to be hunted, skin stitched
To a furrowed brow in wonder of why
I was created. And still I can’t Imagine
How tired everyone else must be.

They’re howling
On the news, locked in frame
By the newscaster, wearing suits
Like it’s the night of the dance, arguing
Like they’ve been married for years.
One says it’s reasonable that I’m tired,
The other isn’t sure that I’m there.

It just so happens that I am tired of being
A sigh on your computer screen, a madman
Barreling down a White House, swearing
And pointing and fucking and getting away
With it all.

It just so happens that I am tired of being
A body that does nothing, a sleep paralysis
Of a person that isn’t sure what they could
Do for themselves. And what about others?
It just so happens that I am tired of being
Tired.
