The Queens men’s basketball team is headed to Sioux Falls, South Dakota to play California Baptist in the Elite Eight after beating Lincoln Memorial University 69-57 to win the Southeast Regionals.
Queens plays California Baptist 7 p.m. on Tuesday in its first Elite Eight appearance since 2003. The Queens Sports Network will be doing a radio broadcast of the game while the NCAA website will provide a livestream. The Queens Sports Network will continue to do radio coverage of the Royals as long as they continue advancing in the NCAA tournament. The Final Four will be broadcasted on the CBS Sports Network while the National Championship Game will be aired on CBS.
Queens won the Southeast Regional by defeating Lincoln Memorial on its home court, a stark difference to last season when Lincoln Memorial advanced out of the Southeast Regional by defeating Queens on its home floor. This was the first win for the Royals in four games against the Railsplitters this season.
The Royals first played Lincoln Memorial this season as the number one ranked team in the country and undefeated to that point. Queens lost by one at home to a Railsplitters team that was then ranked number five in the nation.
Queens next played top-ranked Lincoln Memorial in the final game of the regular season, then ranked number two in the country. Queens lost by 15 on the road. They got another chance against Lincoln Memorial in the SAC Tournament title game, but lost by two in a nail-biter.
The Royals entered the Southeast Regional final with a 30-3 record, all three losses to Lincoln Memorial. The now 31-3 Royals enter the Elite Eight on a three game win streak and fresh off of their first victory over their heel.
Last year’s national champion was 35-1 Northwest Missouri State, who defeated Fairmont State 71-61 in the title game. Neither team is in this year’s Elite Eight.
Beyond the quarterfinal, the Royals will play the semifinal Thursday, March 22 and Saturday, March 24 should they make it to each game. The times for both games have yet to be announced.
