Women’s LAX dominate in season opener

Queens defeated Lenoir-Rhyne University 10 -5 in their season opener. Senior Brittany Phillip led the team in scoring with three goals.Senior Shannon Casey and junior Brittany Barnwell each had two goals.

The Lenoir-Rhyne Bears had five goals total. Junior Sarah Minick, had two goals during the first half, while freshman Mary Minick, scored two goals in the second half.

Casey scored the first goal of the game with 17:20 left in the half. Five minutes later Cydney Herring scored with 12:23 left. Barnwell and senior Kristi Kemp both scored one goal each for the Royals to finish off the first half. The Bears scored two goals to fall behind in the first half 4-2.

During the first 10 minutes of the second half, the Bears tried to catch up to the Royals by scoring three goals to the Royals two. Lenior-Rhyne was only behind by 6-5 with 20:24 minutes remaining in the game.

Sophomore Jessica Rooney scored her first goal of the game at 16:10 minutes remaining. After this goal, the momentum shifted towards the Royals. With another three goals following after Rooney’s, Barnwell scored with 7:08. Followed by Philip scoring two more goals to give her a hat trick for the game.

The lady Royals next game will be away versus Erskine College. Their next home game will be against Conference Carolinas rival Belmont Abbey College on Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. located at the Queens Sports Complex.
